The Piazza: A Modern Neighborhood Inspired by Mediterranean Cities

A Harmonious Collection of Residential Structures

The Piazza is an intimate residential area designed by Badih and Kantar Architects. Drawing inspiration from the evolution of Mediterranean cities, this modern neighborhood embraces a relaxed informality and communal feeling. With its low-rise buildings and bridging terraces, The Piazza creates a unique and character-filled environment.

The Piazza stands out as a collection of harmonious structures, each reflecting its own identity. Situated on a rectangular plot in the heart of Jeddah, this residential area is strategically located near King Fahad Hospital and the Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah road. The site's natural breaks form a route that threads through the development, connecting it seamlessly to the city.

One of the key strengths of The Piazza is its three distinct layers. At street level, residents and visitors can enjoy a vibrant mix of shops, lanes, and gardens. The middle layer comprises well-planned apartments, while the top layer features villas and terraces. This layered approach, influenced by Jeddah's urban spirit, adds depth and variety to the neighborhood.

The realization of The Piazza involved the use of reinforced steel concrete structures, paint and plaster finishing, and mechanical stone-clad walls over concrete masonry units. The buildings feature aluminum-framed windows with double-glazed silicone for energy efficiency. Exposed surfaces are adorned with modified bituminous membrane roofing, adding a touch of contemporary elegance.

While The Piazza is an intimate residential area, it also serves as an open gate community that encourages pedestrian movement. Open piazzas and terraces draw people in, creating a gallery-like experience with retail outlets. This design approach fosters a sense of community and connectivity within the neighborhood.

The creation of The Piazza presented its fair share of challenges. The architects aimed to strike a balance between privacy within the residential compound and public access to the ground level of commerce. The result is a homey identity that stands out amidst the urban chaos that has come to define the city.

The Piazza is a testament to the innovative and practical design philosophy of Badih and Kantar Architects. This project was awarded the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in 2016, recognizing its well-designed, practical, and innovative nature. The architects' attention to detail, integration of industry best practices, and commitment to creating a better world have earned them this accolade.
